5000 mile kayak solo and circumnavigation
Many sailors and kayakers are drawn to circumnavigation. Some circumnavigate barrier islands by kayak while others circumnavigate the globe by sail.
Jake Stachovak launched on December 9, 2009 from Portage, Wisconsin on a 5000 mile solo circumnavigation of the Eastern U.S. To sailors this route is know as the Great Loop.
After paddling 2,221 miles, Jake is visiting the Sweetwater Florida International Kayak Symposium beginning on February 24.
Other circumnavigators include Jessica Watson who sailed Ella's Pink Lady from Sydney Australia in mid October. Jessica is attempting to become the youngest to circumnaviate the globe solo. The sixteen year old girl has already crossed the Equator, a requirement, rounded Cape Horn, and is about to round Cape Agulhas at the tip of Africa.
In February, Abby Sunderland, a few months younger than Abby, restarted her solo attempt to circumnavigate and claim the youngest prize when she sailed Wild Eyes away from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
